Today the world celebrates the 150th anniversary of the professional holiday of postal workers – World Post Day.

As reported by AZERTAG, World Post Day was established in 1874 in the Swiss capital Bern by the decision of the 14th Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). This date was announced in 1969 at the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

The UPU, which has undergone historical development over the years since its creation, has today become an institution that plays an important role not only in the postal sphere, but also in the international world, uniting almost all countries of the world and acting in close cooperation with other international organizations. The UPU is also a political organization and acts as a specialized agency of the UN.

This holiday, which once again emphasizes the important role of the postal industry in economic development, is celebrated annually in more than 150 countries around the world. Many post offices present new products and services on this international holiday.

The admission of Azerbaijan to this organization in April 1993 created additional opportunities for the expansion of the republic’s activities in the postal sphere. Being an independent country, which for a short time was a part of the UPU, the Azerbaijan Post, like other sectors of the country's economy, has gone through a very rapid path of development and achieved important successes in the direction of establishing its activities at the level of international standards defined by the UPU. It is enough to mention just one fact that our country addressed the Council of Administration, the supreme body of this organization, for the first time at the 23rd UPU Congress held in Bucharest in 2004, and both supreme bodies of the organization at the 24th Congress held in Geneva in 2008. He was elected as a member of the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council, and again as a member of the Postal Operations Council at the 26th Congress held in Istanbul in 2016.

In 1991, the postal institution of Azerbaijan joined the Regional Union of Communications (RUC), in 2001 – the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), and the communications enterprise “Azerexpresspost”, which is a branch of “Azerpost”, was accepted as a full member of the EMS UPU Cooperative in 2002.

One of the successes of Azerpost in the international arena is that Azerexpresspost RM was awarded the Gold Level Certificate for 9 times in a row in competitions held among more than 160 postal operators in the world for the quality of express mail services by the Cooperative EMS UPS.

The first postage stamps of Azerbaijan were issued into circulation starting from October 20, 1919. The first postage stamp was dedicated to the Azerbaijani soldier.

It should be noted that the Azerbaijani post also has an ancient history. On June 1, 1818, the first postal service was established on the territory of Azerbaijan.

The first post office was opened in the second largest city of the republic – Ganja. Later, postal expeditions were organized in Baku and Nakhchivan. Mail transportation by rail in Azerbaijan began on May 9, 1883 between Baku and Tbilisi, and between Baku and Derbent in 1900.
