Report on a busy day at Azerpost

On October 9th they have a professional holiday.

Postal workers - who deliver hundreds of letters, telegrams and parcels to their addresses every day, working hard to ensure the timely and reliable delivery of parcels entrusted by citizens to their owners.
On the eve of the holiday, we made our way from the post office with the index AZ1000 of branch number 1 of Azerpost LLC, known to everyone as the “central post office”
To get a closer look at the working day of postal workers who carry out the process of delivering our letters and parcels to their addresses...

When we got to the address, we saw a young postal worker opening a mailbox in front of the building and taking out postcards. In fact, since this process aroused our interest, we stopped and began to watch. After all, most of us think that in the modern age of technological development, no one sends letters or postcards to anyone anymore... However, several postcards taken out of the mailbox now proved that we were wrong. These postcards, which had stamps with photos of our national values, were addressed from Azerbaijan to Russia, Ukraine and Portugal. And most likely, by the time our report was published in the newspaper, the owners would have already read what was written on those postcards...

...Then, “chasing” the young man with a small package in his hand, we entered the post office. We noticed that the young man first took the serial number, and when the time came, he went to the service department and presented the parcel to the operator. The operative who received the parcel first opened it, checked what was inside, and carefully repacked the goods himself. He made notes on the parcel about who to contact the address and phone number. He put it on the scales and found out its weight. He wrote out a receipt for the tariffs and presented it to the boy. This whole process happened very quickly before our eyes, it took only 10 minutes.

During the meeting, we learned that an 18-year-old man named Gasim was sending a jacket as a gift to his girlfriend who lives in Germany. He noted that, since it is convenient for him, he often uses the mentioned Azerpost service and sends gifts to his friend...

206 years of history

October 9 is celebrated all over the world as a professional holiday for postal workers – World Post Day. Today, by decision of the 14th Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), it was created in 1874 in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The admission of Azerbaijan to this organization in 1993 created additional opportunities for expanding the republic's activities in the postal sphere.

The post of Azerbaijan has an ancient history. On June 1, 1818, the first postal service was established on the territory of Azerbaijan. The first post office was opened in the second largest city of the republic - Ganja. Later, postal expeditions were organized to Baku and Nakhchivan. Mail transportation by rail in Azerbaijan began on May 9, 1883 between Baku and Tbilisi, and between Baku and Derbent in 1900.

The first postage stamps of Azerbaijan were issued into circulation starting from October 20, 1919. The first postage stamp was dedicated to the Azerbaijani soldier.

We inform you that after the liberation of our lands from occupation, postal services were opened in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur. Thus, in 2020, a post office was opened in Hadrut, and later in Jojug-Marjanly. In 2022, postal services were provided in the village of Agaly in the Zangilan region.

Work is currently ongoing to establish a postal branch in Khankendi and organize postal services in the cities of Shusha, Lachin, Khojavend and Askaran.

Congratulations on the Victory

According to the head of the index post office AZ1000 of branch No. 1 Govhar Gurbanova, the central post office provides the population with utilities, financial, traditional postal and other services. In the post office with 6 service zones, 54 employees work in shift mode. About 600-700 clients are served here per day.

According to the head of the department, letters, telegrams, parcels from Azerbaijan are sent to most countries of the world. This is accepted simultaneously. Noting that parcels abroad are sent by mail, G.Gurbanova says that the number of parcels sent to our country from abroad has also increased. This is due to online shopping: “All parcels have tracking codes. We have special 13-digit barcodes. We enter them into the system and issue the buyer a receipt with a tracking code. Thus, until it is delivered to the address of the parcel, both international and it can be viewed in the local system”.

Govhar Gurbanova emphasized that during the years of the Patriotic War, there was a particular revival in the postal sphere: “At that time, a large number of soldiers’ families sent telegrams, letters, and parcels. At the same time, congratulatory telegrams sent from within the country and from abroad on the occasion of our victory did not stop one after another. I will also say that stamps, envelopes, and postcards were issued by our postal department in honor of our glorious victory”.

We learned that the deceased senior lieutenant Rashad Rahimov, whose photo was posted at the entrance to the building and flowers were placed in front of him, once worked as a cashier at Azerpost LLC. Rashad Rahimov, who volunteered for the Patriotic War, died heroically on November 9, 2020, in the battles for Shusha.

Employees who carefully preserve the memory of the hero-martyr annually celebrate Rashad Ragimov's birthday and anniversary, visit his grave and pray for his soul.
Letters are delivered closed, parcels open...

The Letters Department is one of the most popular service departments of the post office. But now more official documents are sent here in the form of letters. For example, sending documents of students to some state institutions or international universities, etc.

Operator Nigar Huseynova said that compared to the previous period, the postal service is not as active now: “Because the means of communication have changed. Many people today communicate with each other not through letters, but through the EMS (express mail service), that is, express mail. If a citizen comes and says that he does not want his letter or parcel to be delivered to one of our regions or to one of the foreign countries, we can provide him with the EMS service”.

N.Huseynova reported that all postal items, except letters, are checked by operatives one by one: “We provide an envelope; the citizen puts the letter he has written in it, closes it and writes the information on it himself. We accept the letter in a closed form and send it to our address. The delivery time depends on the distance”.

Fatima Abishova, an operator working in the service department, said that she accepts and sends parcels from citizens here: “Parcels are accepted openly. If it is closed, it must be opened and inspected during acceptance. If it contains flammable substances, sharp objects, perfumes, perishable food products, etc., included in the list of prohibited goods, we exclude them and do not allow them to be sent. We pack the goods well. Warning forms are pasted on packages containing perishable products so that there are no problems during transportation.

The goods of private entrepreneur Shahbaz Huseynov, a regular customer of the post office, were packed with special care for shipment to America right next to us.

Letters from the front...

If you’ve come to the post office, why not meet the postman?!

In other words, without this our report would not make sense... Usually we are used to seeing men in the postman profession, but we have quite a few female postmen who carry out this profession with honor.
56-year-old postman Khalida Huseynova, who has just returned to work after delivering letters in the service sector, is one of those who love the profession.
Ms. Khalida says that the job of a postman is difficult and requires a lot of responsibility: “We have to deliver all the letters and telegrams to the owners on time. It doesn’t matter if it’s raining, snowing, thunderstorms or 40 degrees; we have to do our job on time”.

She adds with a smile that she has been working as a postman for many years, but has never been as proud of her profession as during the Great Patriotic War: “I delivered letters from our heroic fighters who liberated our land from occupation to their families. At that moment, I shared the happiness of these parents, brothers and sisters, spouses, children and joined in the tears of joy...”

In general, all the employees of the main post office with whom we spoke unequivocally said that their main responsibility is to satisfy their customers.

They emphasized that since postal work is a service to people, it requires attention, patience, and most importantly, love.

We were already approaching the end of a busy and interesting working day spent at Azerpost. Although we were finishing our report, the postal workers stayed here until eight o'clock in the evening...
Deliver incoming letters, telegrams, and parcels to their owners on time...
