The event was organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is the regulator and participant of the global postal system, and was held with the participation of the Technology and Logistics Department of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the COP representation of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the Climate Action and Clean Air Department of the International Maritime Organization, the World Bank's Directorate for Transport, as well as "Azerpost" LLC, the only national postal operator of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
At the event titled "Climate Value Chain in Postal Work: Global Focus on Cargo Transportation", the impact of cargo transportation on the climate, management of cargo emissions, and means of supporting the climate were discussed.
It was noted that in recent years, 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are accounted for by postal cargo transportation. Two-thirds of small-volume e-commerce sent through the UPI network, as well as the rapidly growing demand for e-commerce, are key factors driving this issuance process.
In order to reduce these emissions, the importance of developing new strategies and expanding cooperation between postal organizations was emphasized. For this, it was noted that first of all, proposals such as the use of different transport models, updated sorting centers, joint operation of integrated postal networks should be discussed.
In the end, raising awareness in the postal ecosystem, applying technological and operational innovations, investment initiatives, and sharing experiences were identified by the event participants as important means to reach a positive conclusion and support climate conditions.
Speaking at the event, Isi Mustafayev, Acting Chairman of the Board of Directors of "Azerpost" LLC, noted that until today, the institution has optimized postal routes in order to reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption, and applied digital solutions to reduce paper consumption in the sorting center.
At the event, the COP 29 brand dedicated to COP 29 by "Azerpost" LLC and made of 100% recycled paper in keeping with the mission of COP 29 was stamped by the participants of the event. With this, "Azerpocht" LLC was able to make its contribution to the event, both practically and symbolically.
